District of Vanderhoof’s proposed budget for 2024 will see a significant allotment towards its airport development plan. Money will be invested in security, runway enhancements and operational efficiency projects.

The Budget 2024 includes provisions for the installation of a 590-metre-long fence at the airport, complete with two double swing manual gates. Standing at a height of 6 feet, the fence aims to enhance security and safety on the premises. Generously, Coastal GasLink has donated the chain-link fence and gates. The project, estimated at $31,854, covers installation costs of $25,354 along with $2,500 for legal surveys to determine property lines. Anticipating future needs, authorities note the possibility of an additional gate.

Money is also allotted to install runway turn pads. Scheduled to commence on July 1 and conclude by October 31, the airport is set to undergo significant enhancements with the addition of runway turn pads. This development seeks to streamline aircraft turnarounds on Runway 07-25, catering to the needs of various aviation operations. Following a recent relocation of the Wildfire Service base to the Vanderhoof Airport, the project’s design has been revised to accommodate current and future aircraft used in wildfire suppression. The project’s estimated cost of $452,000, will see $255,899 sourced from grants.

In addition the 2024 budget also accounts for a permanent airport terminal which was successfully completed with a $50,000 grant from TC Energy. The total amount of the project including operations charges was estimated at $115,000o.
