Safety concerns over pedestrian crossings along the CN Rail corridor in Vanderhoof are set to be addressed with the approval of a fencing project stretching from Burrard Crossing to Recreation Drive.

The initiative, aimed at enhancing safety along the rail line, received the green light from the district council during the April 15 budget meeting.

The $120,000 project, will primarily be funded through a $96,000 grant from the Rail Safety Improvement Program (RISP).

Various options were considered, including temporary fencing solutions and advocacy for improved monitoring by CN Rail. Council’s past efforts to address crossing safety concerns, including appeals to the Provincial Ministry of Transportation and the College of New Caledonia, have paved the way for this initiative. Notably, the installation of fencing is anticipated to eventually lead to whistle cessation through town.

The proposed fencing will adhere to CN Rail’s standard criteria, featuring 1.83-metre chain-link security fencing along the mutual property line.

While CN Rail expressed support for the safety efforts, financial contributions were not offered for the project.

However, local support is bolstering the endeavour, with the Co-op expressing willingness to contribute through significant savings on fencing materials. Additionally, there’s potential for partnership with the College of New Caledonia to further enhance the project’s impact.
