World Restart A Heart Day was Oct. 16, and Vanderhoof’s community paramedic Jodie Dobry is hosting an event Oct. 21 to encourage locals to learn CPR and how to use a defibrillator machine.

“It’s province-wide and we are having it on Oct. 21 because kids will be out of school, and more parents will be off work,” explains Dobry.

The event will be held at the Vanderhoof Fire Hall at 2230 Nechako Avenue on Sunday, and hands-only CPR and automated external defibrillator (AED) lessons will be held at 1:30 p.m., 2:30 p.m., 3:30 p.m. and 4:30 p.m. Dobry says the sessions take about 20 minutes, and she’ll be showing a Powerpoint presentation on CPR and AED as well.

“I’ll also have an advanced care paramedic coming to speak, and there will be police and fire officers there for anyone with questions.”

Community members will be able to tour an ambulance, police car and fire truck – something that’s often a hit with younger attendees.

“We are also doing mini fire extinguisher lessons and other activities, and there will be snacks and beverages,” says Dobry, adding that people can just come to observe if they don’t want to try out CPR.

Locals of all ages are welcome at what is sure to be an informative and fun event on Sunday.
