This year’s Halloween festivities at the Fraser Lake waterfront will be the biggest yet and will celebrate the area’s strength and resiliency after a challenging summer of wildfires.

The Village of Fraser Lake has partnered with the Fraser Lake and District Chamber of Commerce to present a Welcome Home Celebration and White Swan Pumpkin Walk Oct. 31 at the White Swan Park picnic shelter. The event begins with a bonfire at 6:30 p.m., and there will be a free barbecue at 7 p.m., a Pumpkin Walk, music by DJ Dale and fireworks at 7:45 p.m.

Village of Fraser Lake economic development officer Dave Christie says the Halloween festivities and Pumpkin Walk take place every year and typically include a small community barbecue, a bonfire and fireworks. This year, the Village received a Canadian Red Cross Community Gatherings grant and has expanded the event to turn it into a larger celebration to welcome home wildfire evacuees.

“We’re celebrating the resiliency of the area, people coming back, and people staying and helping firefighters on the fire lines for over 30 days,” says Christie. “At the end of the day, it’s a celebration that people are back home. Neighbours can see each other again. Friends can see each other again. It’s all about getting people back together.”

Christie says the Pumpkin Walk is typically a Chamber of Commerce-sponsored event, but this year, the Village has partnered with the Chamber. The evening is free, and the community barbecue will feature six-ounce sirloin burgers, jumbo hot dogs and hot chocolate.

This year’s Pumpkin Walk will feature 120 pumpkins. Christie says they typically get 60 pumpkins, and the Grade 4 and 5 students carve them for the walk, but the grant money allowed them to make it even bigger this year.

“With the grant, we bought 120 pumpkins, so every student from Grade 4 to 7 can carve one,” he says. “It will be the biggest Pumpkin Walk yet.”

Christie says this year’s fireworks display will also be bigger than usual. There will also be music at the park this year, as they have hired DJ Dale for the event.

Christie encourages everyone to come to White Swan Park on Oct. 31.

“It’s going to be a great celebration, and we’re going to have lots of food,” he says.
