NVSS wrestlers take home 10th straight zone championship title

Fourteen members of the NVSS team have qualified for the provincial championships later this month

Nechako Valley Secondary School (NVSS) wrestlers have captured their 10th straight North Central Zone Championships title. 

On Feb.6, NVSS hosted the championships, with the home team seeing multiple victories. 

Competitors came from Bella Coola, Mackenzie, Burns Lake and Prince George. 

Among the highlights, grade 11 student Sara McPhail of NVSS was named the most outstanding female wrestler and Gryphon Jewett-White of Prince George Secondary School (PGSS) won the most outstanding male wrestler in the North Central zone.

"The team has had an excellent season winning all four local competitions, as well as winning a 24 team tournament in New Westminster in mid January," Travis Himmelright, head coach of the NVSS team, said in a statement on Feb. 7. 

He added that 22 members of the wrestling team just returned from Edmonton, Alta. last weekend where they competed in one of the largest highschool competitions in Western Canada.

The team placed 5th in the competition, bringing home 11 medals. There were just under 1,000 athletes from 97 different schools, Himmelright said.

Next up, 14 members of the NVSS team have qualified for the provincial championships held at the PNE Forum in Vancouver, B.C. Feb. 19 to 23.
