The Stellat’en First Nation, in partnership with the Village of Fraser Lake, is acquiring 5.6 acres of land from the Village, with plans beginning with a hotel.
This is expected to be the largest commercial development in Fraser Lake in decades, Stellat’en First Nation said in a statement released June 20.
“Stellat’en and Fraser Lake have been discussing these lands since they were first opened up for development 15 years ago,” said Robert Michell, chief of the Stellat’en First Nation, in the statement.
“Along with all the other projects Stellat’en is developing, this will be an important asset for both our members and people living in and visiting Fraser Lake. With Stellat’en slated to be the largest corporate partner in the region, we’re excited to be working together and building out the region in a way that benefits us all.”
A feasibility study is currently underway to determine the exact nature and components of the development, but Stellat’en said it is planning on staying true to the zoning and Fraser Lake’s Official Community Plan, while creating a commercial venue that provides services to everyone living in and visiting the area.
“Fraser Lake hasn’t seen a major commercial investment in a very long time, and with our economy shifting away from major industry, attracting new jobs and services to our community is so important,” said Sarrah Storey, mayor of the Village of Fraser Lake.
“Stellat’en committing to a major investment in Fraser Lake, on top of all their work at Stellaquo and beyond, is a great demonstration of their commitment to our region and I’m so grateful that we’re able to work together on some of these initiatives.”
The development will be phased, with the first phase planned for construction in 2026 including a new hotel. The final size of the hotel and included amenities will be determined through the feasibility study.
