Shelley Funk, the manager of the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce, wears many hats — from being a devoted wife and mother to a proud grandmother of nine.
Funk and her husband moved to Vanderhoof 26 years ago after purchasing a ranch. After winding down their ranching operations, her husband ventured into the automobile business, in which Funk assisted.
Following years of collaboration in the automotive industry and managing a restaurant and catering company, Shelley found herself at the Vanderhoof Chamber of Commerce, initially viewing it as a “semi-retirement” endeavour.
Little did she know, it would ignite a passion for community building.
Funk and her family opted to remain in Vanderhoof, drawn by the recreational opportunities in nature and a welcoming community.
“We enjoyed exploring the countryside and the area, relishing the company of the people here, and gradually settling in,” she said.
Funk emphasised that Vanderhoof’s essence lies in its community spirit, where residents generously dedicate their time to enriching the town. From organising events like the Wild Goose Chase fun run to cross-country skiing races, collaborative efforts by volunteers foster a vibrant atmosphere, she noted. Funk and her husband also organise the annual Hooterville Hoot car show in town.
“You have a few individuals organising various events, leading to a diverse array of activities, and that’s something I truly appreciate about our town – the willingness of people to contribute their time to make these events happen,” she stated.
“I wouldn’t relocate from the community; I like it here so much that I would choose to stay,” she said, adding, “I believe it’s an excellent place for families of all ages.”
As the manager of the Chamber of Commerce, Funk’s focus extends beyond administrative duties.
“I’m actively working to revitalise the chamber,” she explained. “I enjoy engaging with people, conversing with them, and exploring ways to assist them.” Through initiatives such as luncheons and after-hours events, Funk aims to facilitate networking and support for members.
In addition to her professional pursuits, Shelley finds solace and joy in the simple pleasures offered by Vanderhoof. From cross-country skiing in winter to cycling and swimming in summer, she enthusiastically embraces the outdoor lifestyle. Together with her husband, she also relishes attending car shows, immersing herself in his passion for vintage automobiles.
