Open burning for Category 2 and Category 3 activities will be permitted in the Mackenzie, Prince George, and Stuart Nechako Forest Districts, which include the Mackenzie, Prince George, Robson Valley, and VanJam fire zones, starting at noon on September 27.
However, due to ongoing drought conditions, a high grass fire hazard, and the risk of human-caused wildfires, Category 2 and Category 3 open burning remains prohibited in the Fort Nelson and Peace Forest Districts, which include the Fort Nelson, Dawson Creek, and Fort St. John fire zones. This prohibition will stay in effect until 12 p.m. (noon) on Tuesday, Oct. 15, 2024, or until the order is lifted.
BC Wildfire Service is asking members of the public to ensure the regulations specific to their forest district regarding open fire bans and restrictions.
Before starting any fire, residents are advised to check with local authorities to confirm any local burning regulations.
Always practice safe open burning techniques where permitted, and be fully prepared and aware of the current conditions.
Anyone found in contravention of an open-burning prohibition may be issued a violation ticket for $1,150, may be required to pay an administrative penalty of up to $10,000 or, if convicted in court, may be fined up to $100,000 an/or sentenced to one year in jail. If the contravention causes or contributes to a wildfire, the person responsible may be ordered to pay all firefighting and associated costs.
To report a wildfire, unattended campfire or open burning violation, call 1-800-663-5555 toll-free or *5555 on a cell phone or through the BC Wildfire Service mobile app.
