Nechako Nordics gears up for exciting ski season ahead

Nechako Nordics, the non-profit cross-country ski organization, is ready to kick off another winter season, thanks to the hard work of its dedicated volunteers and recent upgrades to its facilities.

Chairperson Richard Burkholder shared that the club has been buzzing with activity as preparations continue for what promises to be a great season.

“Our trails are in excellent condition, thanks to our many volunteers,” Burkholder said.

This year, the club has made a significant investment in a new riding mower, which will help maintain the trails not only for skiing but also for summer activities like mountain biking and running.

In addition to the mower, the club has unveiled a new Grooming Maintenance and Storage Shop, funded by grants from the Northern Development Initiatives Fund and the Nechako-Kitamaat Development Fund. This facility will store grooming equipment and ensure everything is in peak condition for the winter months ahead.

The Nechako Nordics will offer a range of programs for all ages, including Bunnies, Jackrabbits, Track Attack, Race Group, Biathlon, and Adult lessons. Notably, the Ski S’Kool program will provide lessons to all Grade 3 students in Vanderhoof, encouraging youth to embrace the sport.

The club's Ski Rental Shed will open during the Christmas Holidays and will operate Sundays from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. starting in January. Additionally, a Free Skiing event is scheduled for Family Day on February 17, 2025, inviting the entire community to enjoy the trails.

Reflecting on last year’s season, Burkholder acknowledged the challenges posed by low snowfall across the province but noted that Nechako Nordics was fortunate to have a successful year.

"We prepare our trails very well, so we don’t need a lot of snow to get started,” he said, while expressing optimism for this year’s conditions too.

Early registration is now open, and while responses have been slow initially, the club expects a strong turnout, typically retaining 80 to 90 per cent of last year’s members while attracting newcomers.

This year, the club has also welcomed 12 new coaches, enhancing the quality of instruction and further solidifying its reputation in the region, Burkholder said.

Burkholder encourages everyone to become members ahead of the season as NVSA (Nechako Nordics: Cross Country Ski Section) members have unlimited use of both the Nechako Valley Sporting Association (NVSA) and the Waterlily Lake Trail Systems.
