The Nechako Valley Junior girls team placed third at the BC High School Cross Country Provincial Championships held in White Rock earlier this month.

Held at Crescent Park in White Rock on Nov.4, the championship saw 230 girls from grades 8 to 10, from around the province, race each other for the title.

“The junior girls from Nechako Valley made team history as they finished third in the province,” said head coach Brian Nemethy.

After 25 years of coaching the cross country runners, it was awesome to see the girls on the podium, Nemethy said. “Hard work does pay off.”

In the past the girls have finished fourth (twice), fifth and sixth.

Nechako Valley girls competed against 28 junior girls’ teams, and made the podium for the very first time. The team consisted of Mika Hara, Lyric Kessler, Anya Dhillon, Brenna McCleary, Isabel Simoes.

With teams up to seven runners and with the first four runners across the line counting as points - lowest score wins, Nechako Valley finished with 131 points only five points ahead of Oak Bay from Victoria who were fourth.

Revelstoke Secondary with 32 points placed first and Seaton Secondary from Vernon were second with 103 points.

In the boy’s junior race, Nechako Valley placed 13th, competing against 33 teams which saw 284 students participate.
