The Nechako Valley Secondary School boys’ rugby team, secured victory at the recent zones held in Williams Lake on May 10 and 11, claiming the top spot in senior boys’ 7s rugby.
Their decisive 7-0 win over Peter Skene Odgen earned them the right to progress to the provincial championships in Abbotsford on May 28, 29, and 30.
Joining them in the competition were teams from Peter Skene Odgen Secondary School, North Peace Secondary School, and Prince George Secondary School.
Coach Braxton Fawcett praised the Vanderhoof team for their ability to swiftly move the ball out of rucks.
Despite facing a formidable opponent in Peter Skene Odgen, the Vikings displayed resilience, preventing numerous scoring attempts and maintaining a cohesive defensive front, Fawcett said.
“There were many trials attempted by them but they were held up by the Vanderhoof boys to prevent them from scoring,” he said.
Reflecting on their progress, Fawcett expressed pride in the team’s growth and unity.
“I am proud to coach them as they have come a long way as a team.
He hopes their experiences on the rugby pitch instil valuable life lessons and inspire a continued passion for the sport among the players.
