On Friday July 28, at the Hospice Suite at Stuart Nechako Manor, a cheque for $2,500 from the ‘Paddle for Hospice’ event was presented to the Vanderhoof Hospice Society.
It was the second annual ‘Paddle for Hospice’ event organised by the Nechako Valley Sporting Association (NVSA). The $2,500 funds will help Vanderhoof Hospice Society continue with essential upgrades to the Hospice Suite and Family Room facility serving the Stuart Nechako region.
Entries were up from last year, with 60 competitors on 38 canoes and kayaks enjoying a windy, but fast day on the Nechako.
One participant came all the way from Victoria to race, and those from last year all returned.
There were many complements on our great stretch of water, and especially the park and amenities at the end. “Prince George has nothing as good.”
The food was supplied by the Vanderhoof Hospice Society, and major supporters were Rio Tinto, Woody’s Bakery, Nechako Valley Search and Rescue, Community Futures Stuart Nechako, Earthenware and Stride &Glide Sports and the District of Vanderhoof for use of the park and sound system.
Tom Bulmer provided the usual great comments and enthusiasm on the mic. and kept everything moving along smoothly.
“It was a great success. We look forward to next year!” said Paul Collard of NVSA.
“Thanks to everyone working hard to provide hospice service to Vanderhoof,” said Jeannie Sinclair, cookie-medal first place winner with her paddle partner Mia Moutray. “It was a super fun trip down the Nechako - a cookie has never tasted so good!”
