Vanderhoof farmer Mayson Williams has eggs, lots of them, and she’s offering teachers the chance to hatch them in their classrooms.

The hatching eggs are free for classrooms to hatch, on the condition that the chicks are returned. If teachers wish to keep the chicks for their own farms, they can be purchased.

“The reason that we have started doing the program is there’s lots of families and lots of children that just don’t really know where food comes from. And so that’s a big thing for our farm, just educating people about farm life and where our food comes from,” said Williams.

“Being able to bring hatching eggs into classes so that they can be a part of that process and understand like, how eggs are laid and how chickens are born […] that’s the biggest thing for me.”

Williams said the program was a success last year, with three teachers hatching eggs with their class. She also said the feedback she received from the teachers was that it was a wonderful experience.

“We had one teacher reach out that said that it was absolutely amazing, that they loved it, [and] that she noticed a huge difference in some of her special needs students. Just learning to care and take care of the eggs in the incubator and the chicks after just made a really big difference on them,” she said.

So far this year, Williams said she already has lots of interest in the egg hatching program. She says she has had teachers driving from near and far to pick up some eggs for their school.
