The Quesnel Kangaroos clinched a 4-2 victory over the Nechako Northstars on Jan. 4 at Vanderhoof Arena, capitalizing on powerplay opportunities and a late empty-netter to secure the win.
Jordan Low opened the scoring for Quesnel midway through the first period on a powerplay, giving his team an early advantage. Christopher Thon followed up with another goal just minutes later, putting the Kangaroos ahead 2-0 at the end of the first period.
In the second, the Northstars’ Matthew Werstuik found the back of the net to cut the deficit to 2-1. However, the Kangaroos restored their two-goal lead when Brody Dyck scored on a powerplay, leaving the Northstars trailing 3-1 heading into the final frame.
David Jellett reignited Nechako’s hopes early in the third, narrowing the score to 3-2. But any momentum was dashed when Alessio Tomassetti secured the game with an empty-net goal in the dying moments, cementing the final score of 4-2 for Quesnel.
