Steve Little is running for re-election to Vanderhoof district council.

Little, a car salesman, has been on the district council for the last 10 years. He has served as the president of Vanderhoof Minor Hockey, Minor Softball, Curling Club and Vanderhoof Rec. ball. He has also been an executive in the Omineca Hockey League.

Over his last term, he has also served a representative on the Pool Committee, the Chamber of Commerce, and on the Energy Committee.

He says his top priorities are youth and sports in the community. Little says he thinks there’s still a lot to do for both of those things.

He says he would also like to see senior housing established. “It is something we’ve been working on for probably nine years. And I think we’re getting close and I’d like to see that finished.”

Little also wants to see the skate park built and support other places for the youth in the community to spend their time.

Another priority is finalizing the community forest. Before he was a car salesman, Little was a forestry technologist, and he says he has applied that knowledge in council in discussing the community forest.

Another project he would like to see completed is the sturgeon hatchery, which is getting an interpretive centre “to increase the schooling opportunities,” among other projects.

Little says he thinks the current council is made up of people who “all look at things slightly different, and I think that is something that we need. We can’t have everybody thinking exactly the same. We need different views on everything, and I think that’s one of the things I bring to the table … Looking at things slightly different than everybody else does. Sometimes it hurts me, but sometimes it doesn’t.”

He has family roots in Vanderhoof, where his grandparents arrived in 1912 and stayed until 1958, with a brief return in 1960. Little moved to Vanderhoof in 1985, and has lived here ever since.

Little describes himself as a family man. He is also heavily involved in youth sports in the community. “I’m involved in a lot of the youth sports, I coach the junior and senior girl’s hockey teams and I work with the kids out at the golf course, helping them learn how to golf … But I like to stay involved.”

He says he isn’t planning to do too much campaigning this time around, as most of the community knows who he is. “I’m just Steve.”
