Residents of Vanderhoof will have access to better internet services as per a $9 million investment by CityWest.

In a Sept. 22 news release, the company announced that they will be expanding into Vanderhoof later this year.

Mayor Gerry Thiessen said, “We have been working for many years to see a company invest fibre in our community. This commitment from CityWest is a great building block in the ‘information highway’ having a strong presence in Vanderhoof.”

The company said they will bring high-speed internet, TV and phone services over fibre-to-the-home technology and are aiming to have their first customers in Vanderhoof by the end of 2020.

Thiessen said this investment will allow local businesses to operate more effectively and efficiently.

“And it will also enable our young people to access great educational opportunities similar to more urban areas of the province,” he said.

CityWest will roll out the initial stages before the end of the year with $2 million being set aside for the first stages of construction.

“Next year, CityWest intends to continue to build and bring service to the community using a combination of its own money as well as external funding,” as stated in the press release.

CityWest’s office will be located at 2353 Burrard Avenue. The company purchased the building in 2019.

Over the past five years, the company has increased it’s fibre footprint in Smithers, Houston, Lake Kathlyn, Telkwa and Hazelton.

In March 2019, ABC Communications had also completed their Future is Now project that deployed fixed 4G LTE internet services to many rural communities in B.C.
