Travellers  riding VIA’s passenger train had to be bussed from Smithers to Prince George just days before Christmas  when tracks were blocked from a derailment. 18 fully-loaded coal cars had jumped the tracks just east of Vanderhoof, CN reported.

No one was injured but several other freight trains were delayed and coal was spilled, however not into any bodies of water, a CN spokesperson confirmed.

Crews had the tracks cleared and carrying trains again by early the next morning.
