The District of Vanderhoof is busy interviewing for a new fire chief.

Ex-fire chief Jim Hurtado has stepped into the post temporarily to replace Jay Bangs, until a new candidate is picked.

As part of the role, Hurtado is helping with the hiring process by sitting in on all the interviews.

Twenty-twp people applied for the position, which the district narrowed down to four.

Hurtado says all the applicants are from out of town and so he will likely have to stay on for a while longer to help to help with the new chief.

“I’m just keeping the lights on until somebody takes over - it will be later in the spring before everything gets going and the new chief starts” said Hurtado.

In the meantime, Hurtado says he is enjoying his brief stint back on the job.

“I miss the crew and working with all the guys,” he said.

“I don’t miss some of the stuff but it goes with the territory.”
