Four Rivers Co-op is stepping up as wildfires sweep across B.C.
The co-operative has activated its Fire Relief Fund at all locations throughout its trading area, including Vanderhoof, Prince George, Quesnel, 100 Mile House, Houston and Terrace.
Customers can make a cash donation for the Red Cross that Four Rivers Co-op will match.
“We believe it’s the right thing to do,” said general manager Allan Bieganski.
“This was very similar to what we did in 2017 and 2018.”
Residents quickly opened their hearts and wallets as destructive fires resulted in the evacuation of more than 65,000 people over the summer of 2017.
Four Rivers Co-operative marketing coordinator Renee Dick said $20,056 was matched, resulting in a donation of $40,113 to the Red Cross.
In 2018 as wildfires hit closer to home near communities such as Fraser Lake and Fort St. James, Dick said members donated $6,928 that was once again matched for a total donation to the Red Cross of $13,857.
“It’s an amazing program and one that we’re really proud of,” she said.
Bieganski said by working together during what’s appearing to be a terrible forest fire season, he is hopeful British Columbians will be able to pull through as they had in 2017 and 2018.
