Funding announced last week will help Chilliwack School District purchase five more school buses.

Funding has been announced for school districts across the province, with a piece of the pie carved out for Chilliwack.

The life of four schools will be extended with replacements to electrical systems, dust collection systems and boilers at A.D. Rundle Middle, Chilliwack Middle, Vedder Elementary and Vedder Middle schools. The total allocated to Chilliwack for those upgrades is $1.1 million, and the projects were chosen off the district's own five-year plan.

There will also be five new 80+ passenger school buses, purchased with provincial funding of $826,022.

This is in addition to the new B.C.-wide, $27.4 million Student Learning Grant that was announced a few weeks ago, at $50 per student. For Chilliwack, that amount totals $688,939 and is intended for purchasing classroom equipment ad supplies, including textbooks, lab equipment and art supplies in support of the new curriculum. It's in the form of a one-time grant, totaling $27.4 million across the province.

The Province announced the funding streams on Thursday.

John Martin, MLA for Chilliwack, said "our government is committed to building a better British Columbia for future generations. This funding will help provide students in Chilliwack with the resources they need to reach their full potential."

Laurie Throness, MLA for Chilliwack-Hope, was quoted as saying "I'm very excited about the funding announced today. Ensuring students are able to get to school safely and reliably is key to their learning. These five new buses will help ensure students and their families have safe transportation options."
