Children and youth of Fraser Lake, Vanderhoof and Fort St. James will be able to experience hockey school.

Northern Grit Hockey is hosting a hockey school at the Vanderhoof Arena with the newest senior AA team, Nechako North Stars.

“Hockey school is a really neat experience for a kid being on the ice and doing dry land every day for five days out of the week, and it builds a lot of good relationships with kids from out of town,” said organizer David Simoes.

“Personally, it was some of my biggest memories growing up and starting off the hockey season with hockey school.”

The hockey school taking place Monday, August 30 to Friday, September 3 is open to ages six to fifteen.

The 40 participants will be divided into two groups and take part in two ice sessions and one dry session daily.

A local personal trainer, as well as NCAA Division player Greg Egan, will be on hand to assist.

Simoes said he could not recall when a hockey school was last held in the area and believes it will be a first for Vanderhoof.

He thanked the District of Vanderhoof for getting the ice in early, noting they usually would not be skating until mid-September, early October.

“Last year we weren’t able to get a hockey experience with Covid and this year with things opening up, I think it’s a really good time to introduce hockey school into the area of Vanderhoof,” Simoes added.

“I’m hoping it’s going to be special, and I know it’s going to be a lot of fun.”

Proceeds from the hockey school will support the Nechako North Stars that are hoping for an exhibition against the Williams Lake Stampeders in September.

Any remaining funds will go to assisting the Breakfast Club launched by Simoes in 2019.
