VANDERHOOF – Construction is set to begin on intersection improvements at Highway 16 and Mapes Road thanks to a $3.26 million contract from the B.C. government.

Improvements include realigning the intersection to improve sight distance and safety. In addition, the existing eastbound passing lane will be extended westward by approximately one kilometre.

This project follows the 2012 completion of a two-kilometre eastbound passing lane on Mapes Road and realignment of 500 metres of highway. The total length of the passing lane will be 3 kilometres once the intersection is complete.

“Highway 16 is a busy corridor in our region and through this investment, our government is improving traffic safety,” Nechako Lakes MLA John Rustad said. “That’s good for residents and that’s good for our regional economy.”

This project is part of B.C. on the Move, the B.C. government’s 10-year transportation plan to improve the province’s transportation network.

Work is expected to be completed this fall.
