Nechako Valley Search and Rescue (NVSAR) are reminding the public that ice fishing on the river is dangerous.

In a Jan. 30 social media post, NVSAR members said that recently two individuals were spotted ice fishing where Stoney Creek meets the Nechako river.

There was an open water under-current close to the spot used by the individuals for ice fishing.

“We cannot state clear enough this is incredibly dangerous. Changing ice conditions, water levels, the current shifting, temperature and variations in ice thickness can mean sudden and catastrophic danger for those on the ice,” officials said in the social media post.

“While our water team members are certified as advanced ice rescue technicians, we would much rather not have to respond to a call that could have so easily been avoided.”

NVSAR said the public should do their ice fishing on lakes where the risk is easier to manage.
