The NVSS Queer Alliance Group have launched “Share the Love” campaign.

Through this campaign, the group sent out letters along with a rainbow decal, requesting local businesses to “Share the Love” by displaying the provided decal in the window or door of their business space.

“We, as a Queer Alliance, know and understand businesses displaying a rainbow sticker or flag can make people feel safe, welcome and secure. Vanderhoof is becoming more and more diverse every year and we want members of our Queer community to know that they are seen, accepted, and most of all included here in the heart of the North,” stated the letter dated Feb. 2021.

If a business is unable to display the decal in their business space, the group is asking owners to return it to Erin Baker at the front desk of NVSS, or find another space like the lunchroom where the decal may be displayed.

Baker works at NVSS and is the Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity representative. She told the Express that the vision for the NVSS Queer Alliance Group is to focus on building a sense of community, positivity and empowerment.

“Students are part of this community and want to see themselves represented in the world around them. We wanted to focus on something that students can do, and show solidarity from their generational perspective. The idea was to have something gentle, yet intentional and meaningful,” Baker said.

She said the rainbow crosswalk is still something the group wants to see come to fruition; however the recent controversy within Vanderhoof has put the idea on hold for now.
