There is an ongoing phone scam in Vanderhoof where people are being told there is a package for them but they have to pay before they can claim the parcel.
In a Jan. 19 news release, RCMP said people are being asked to purchase items like Google Play or i-Tunes gift cards, provide serial numbers of these cards, after which the parcel will be shipped to them.
“If you should receive a telephone call like this, simply hang up,” Sgt. Kyle Ushock of the Vanderhoof RCMP said.
Police said residents can block these numbers and should under no circumstance comply with the request. Legitimate companies do not accept these types of payments for shipments of items.
