Vanderhoof athletes have a successful run at zone championships in Quesnel

Vanderhoof cross country runner Ava Bailey became the first female athlete from the NVSS team to win the Zone championship banner.

43rd annual High School X-Country Zone Championships were held Saturday, Oct. 23, at West Fraser Timber Park in Quesnel.

NVSS coaches, Brian and Wanda Nemethy took 13 well-trained runners to the championship.

Bailey won in a sprint finish beating out Raelle Amboe from Fort St. John.

“We have had many boys win the zone championship but this is our first ever gal to win the zone championship,” Mr. Nemethy said.

Bailey broke the tape on the finish line in 19 minutes 53 seconds.

On the boys side, Jimmy Reed, grade 8 student, almost did the very same things, says Nemethy.

Just coming up a little short as Josiah Wilkinson, grade 10 runner from PG secondary beat Reed to the line.

“Having a grade 8 student beat a grade 10 student is very rare but Jimmy gave Josiah a run for his money,” Mr. Nemethy said.
