The Vanderhoof Community Challenge is happening again this year with 50 per cent of the money raised going to support Ukrainian refugees relocating to B.C.

Participants will record how many times they can travel the 8,154 kilometres from Vanderhoof to the Ukranian capital of Kyiv.

The event kicks off April 22 with a community challenge and first prize draw at Riverside Park and runs until May 20. Local businesses donated gift baskets as prizes and there will be weekly draws every Monday announced every Tuesday morning.

The event will wrap up May 27 at Riverside Park where the amount raised and distance traveled will be announced along with a final basket draw.

One of the foundation’s directors Mary Burkholder said the event is welcoming to anyone at any fitness level.

“We encourage and welcome everyone and anyone to participate in and do to the best of their ability and to give what they are able to give,” Burkholder said.

The event happened in 2020-21 as a way for people to come together virtually and keep in shape during the pandemic.

She explained that the kickoff and wrap-up events will involve group activities for the first time thanks to COVID-19 restrictions lifting.

Teams and individuals can participate together or apart as they like. People can participate in any way that allows them to track their kilometres such as running, swimming or cycling.

Teams can include any number of family, friends, co-workers, classmates or any other group and can include residents from anywhere in the world.

Participants are encouraged to come up with a catchy team name and challenge others they know in a friendly rivalry for kilometres covered or money raised.

Organizers said they will trust reported kilometres based on an “honour system.”

The minimum donation is $10 for an individual or $21 for a family.

Registration began April 12. Forms are available online at https://vhfcf.org and at Earthen Ware in Vanderhoof.
