April 10-16 is Volunteer Appreciation Week.
In Vanderhoof, the community thrives from the work of many volunteers.
This week we have decided to honor two volunteers who work at the Stuart Nechako Manor. Karyn Kindt and Laura McGregor are both grade nine students from NVSS who volunteer at the Stuart Nechako Manor as “candy stripers.”
They have a whole range of duties including taking the residents for walks, serving them drinks and food and just generally hanging out with them and keeping them company. McGregor says she volunteered after she read about it in books...
“I had read about it in books and I thought it would be really cool to be friends with the old people,” she said.
“Also my grandma said that if she ever ends up here she thinks she’ll be really lonely so I want to help the residents feel like they still have people that care about them.”
Kindt says its great experience for her as she wants to become a nurse.
“I wanted to do it because I thought it would be good experience because I want to become nurse when I grow up,” she said.
“It’s also really good fun talking with the residents and getting to know them better.”
The two girls volunteer every Friday from 3:30-5:30 p.m. and other students volunteer on the other days of the week.
