Mary Gray

June 30, 1944 -

June 29, 2006

Mary passed away quietly at home in the early morning of June 29, 2006 after a short battle with cancer. Mary, an only child, was born in Kircaldy, Scotland in 1944 and she spent her youth in Burntisland, Scotland. After completing high school and during a short holiday to northern Scotland in 1961 she met a young (and somewhat shy) Simon Gray who was working for Hydro. They kept in touch even after Simon left for Canada in 1962 while Mary trained as Registered Nurse at the Royal Victoria Hospital in Kirkcaldy. By a fortunate twist of fate and some correspondence, Mary and Simon reunited in Prince George, British Columbia in January 1967. They were married in December 1967 in Canoe, British Columbia. Mary worked at the Quesnel Hospital until the birth of Michael in 1969. The family moved to Fraser Lake in 1970, Nadine was born in 1971 and they have resident in the area ever since. Mary kept busy raising her two children and also being involved in Figure Skating and Scouts Canada. In later years she was an avid reader and actively involved in craft projects including knitting hundreds of stuffed toys which she donated to charities. Mary was predeceased by her parents, Henry and Christina Ewan. She is survived by her loving husband Simon, and her children Michael and Nadine. She will be sadly missed by her family in Scotland and all the friends she made since coming to Canada. Mary especially cherished her relationships with her borrowed grandchildren, Brandon, Chelsea, Dorian and Hope.

The family wishes to extend their thanks to Dr. Shannon Douglas, Dr. Richard Beever and Yvonne Thalheimer for the care Mum received at home. We would also like to extend our gratitude to the Nurses and the staff at the Fraser Lake Community Health Centre, the Fraser Lake Hospice Society and the Nurses at the Cancer Clinic in Prince George.

To honour our Mum’s wishes there will be no funeral service. In lieu of flowers, please make a memorial donation to: The Fraser Lake Hospice Society, Box 369, Fraser Lake, BC V0J 1S0 (250) 699-8960.
