Vanderhoof sled drags a great show of community spirit

Congratulations to the coordinators and sponsors of Sled Drags 2011 held at the Vanderhoof Airport on Sunday February 27.

Editor:

I’d like to send congratulations to the coordinators and sponsors of Sled Drags 2011 held at the Vanderhoof Airport on Sunday February 27.  I was visiting with family in your fine community and had the opportunity to attend the races and volunteer some time.

Despite extreme weather conditions the organizers put on a great show as evidenced by the close to 50 racers who showed up on a blustery, sub-zero morning to take part in the races.

From the volunteer crew who measured and staked the track to the men who staged the racers, to the hearty souls at the end of the track calling the winners, the people at the gate, the crew running the excavators, the wonderful ladies at the concession who ran hot coffee to us, to the two race announcers, the ladies in the race shack doing registration, race results and organizing trophies, to the communications team, across the board these volunteers showed dedication and enormous community spirit.

Being a veteran volunteer coordinator for large events (Budweiser Hydro Plane Races, Kelowna Dragon Boat Races, CJFL Okanagan Sun Football Club) it is the determination of the volunteers, who put in countless and yes, sometimes thankless hours, that keep me volunteering.

My thanks go out to, Mike, Curtis, Lacey, Kevin, Darrell, Ralph, Troy, Jason, Marcel, Daniellle, Marjorie, Kateland to all the volunteers I didn’t get to meet and to all of the racers.  It was an honor to work alongside you.

Vanderhoof is a lucky community to have these folks bringing events to town.  I’m already signed up for next year and looking forward to the races this July!  Good on you Vanderhoof, here’s to your community spirit!

Thanks again,

Midge Smith
